Postdoctoral Researcher (Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellow)

I am a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow hosted by ERCOMER within the EU’s Sixth Framework Programme. My research focuses on psychological, sociocultural, and academic adaptation of acculturating youth, from a comparative perspective and in relation to the perceptions of parenting and intercultural relations. I am also interested in how acculturation impacts parental styles and personality.

Project

Culture Parenting project: Parenting, academic achievement and health among children of Turkish immigrants

Derya Güngör (postdoctoral researcher)
Karen Phalet (supervisor)
Marc H. Bornstein (Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Department of Health and Human Services, Bethesda, USA) (host)
Funding: Marie Curie Outgoing International Fellowship – European Commission (Human Resources and Mobility activity)
Period: January 2007 – August 2009

The aim of the project is to gain understanding of the ways adolescents of immigrant families negotiate the expectations in different socio-cultural contexts and in particular, how they balance agency and relatedness in their self-development. Our approach integrates developmental perspectives on parenting and self-development in adolescents with a cross-cultural social psychological perspective on cultural transmission and acculturation.
