Dr. Alfons Fermin

Research Fellow

Alfons Fermin is a senior researcher at the Sociology Department at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. From 1991 till 2001 he worked at the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences and ERCOMER at Utrecht University. In these years he conducted research on, amongst others, the views of Dutch political parties on minority policy (1977-1995) and on the civic integration policy for new immigrants in the Netherlands. From 2001 – 2004 he worked as a senior researcher at the Research and consultancy QA+ (the Hague), and participated in the acquisition and research of several project in the field of immigrant integration and integration policies for the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, the Ministry of Justice and the Dutch Parliament. Since 2005 he participates as senior researcher in various research project at the Sociology Department at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

    - Writing a background paper on ‘Women migrants in the European Union (EU-25)’, for the EU pre-conference “Diversity and participation: the gender perspective”, organised by the Dutch presidency, July 2004; commissioned by the Department for the Co-ordination of Emancipation Policy of the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (2004)

    - Description of the integration policy of the first 15 EU member states, a study commissioned by the Department for the Co-ordination of Integration Policy of the Dutch Ministry of Justice (2003-2004).

    - Two literature studies on authority of the Temporary Commission Inquiry Integration Policy of the Dutch Parliament: (1) a study on good practices of schooling for the multicultural society in European countries, and (2) a study on the influence of Moroccan and Turkish governments on the integration of Moroccan and Turkish immigrants in the Netherlands (2003).

    - A research project on the Dutch local infrastructure supporting the social participation of the Antilleans, commissioned by the Department for the Co-ordination of Integration Policy of the Ministry of Justice (2003).

    - Participation in the research project ‘the quality of asylum decisions’ of the Research and Documentation Centre (WODC) of the Dutch Ministry of Justice (2004).

    - Participation in the state-of-the-Art study on ‘Antillean at-risk youngsters’ for the Dutch Knowledge center for larger towns and cities (KCGS/KIEM) (2005).
